Arleen's Story:
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the form of DCIS 5 years ago this spring. I underwent a mastectomy of the affected breast and have been following up with tamoxifen. Because I had gone in for a regular annual mammogram, my breast cancer was caught in its earliest stage.
I am thus a strong believer in early detection, no matter one's age. I decided that Komen for the Cure® would offer me the best opportunity to promote early detection and have been a volunteer for the Speaker's Bureau for almost 3 years. My target audience is older senior citizens, both female and male, at Senior Centers in the metro area.
Thanks to the Atlanta Affiliate of Komen for the Cure® for selecting me as the New Balance Survivor. I will take any opportunity to promote my belief in the statement "early detection is the key to survival".
